Artificial insemination

Artificial insemination (also known as assisted reproduction) is a common term for a series of medical treatments and procedures used to treat infertility, which involve manipulation with germ cells or embryos. Nowadays, reproductive medicine offers a wide range of artificial insemination methods, such as ovarian stimulation and planned sexual intercourse, IUI (intrauterine insemination), IVF (in vitro fertilisation), treatment with fresh or frozen donor oocytes (eggs), and many more.

Nurse: Good morning, Ms Connelly.

Patient: Good morning, nurse. I have an appointment for a check-up. My husband and I've been trying to have a baby for two years and we still haven't succeeded. That's why I would like to ask the doctor what to do and perhaps even ask about the possibility of artificial insemination.

Nurse: Ok. Take a seat in the waiting room and I'll call you when the doctor is free. Don't worry. She'll explain everything to you. First, she will examine you thoroughly.

Patient: I understand. If it proves we have to undergo artificial insemination, what examinations should we expect?

Nurse: Well, that would be explained to you in one of the assisted reproduction centres. In any case, your husband would also have to undergo the examinations. It is a clinical examination based on his anamnesis data, semen analysis, and a genetic examination if the doctors find any king of pathology. In your case, it would mean a series of physical examinations, laboratory tests and screenings.

Patient: Oh no. And what chances are there that we succeed?

Nurse: Unfortunately, I'm not able to say. However, this is just the beginning and the first thing to be done is the check-up. You'll see what the results show. Maybe you'll manage it naturally, without the need for artificial insemination. We have a lot of similar cases. Now you can go in, the surgery is free.

Patient: Ok. Thank you for the information and see you soon, nurse.

Nurse: You're welcome. See you soon.
